Article overview
Use a ready-made pronunciation instead of building a respelling from scratch.
Oxford Suggestions give you a dictionary-backed pronunciation for a word, available in American and British English. Preview each option and apply the one that fits — no phonetic spelling required.
Before you get started
- Oxford Suggestions are available in American and British English.
- If a word isn't in the dictionary, try Smart Suggestions instead.
Applying a suggestion
For a single use (not saved to your library):
- Highlight or double-click the word you want to replace.
- In the Smart Toolbar, click the dropdown to view Respelling suggestions, in US or UK pronunciations.
- Click the Play button to preview each option.
- Select the option you want.
To reuse the suggestion across your script or other projects, save it to your Pronunciation Library:
- Highlight the word to open the Smart Toolbar.
- Click on + New Replacement.
- Confirm the Original text field, which fills in automatically.
- In the Replacement field, preview the US and UK suggestions and choose the one that fits.
- Click on Save to Library.
Once saved, the word appears bolded in your script, and the replacement applies wherever that text appears going forward.
You can also start from the Pronunciation Library instead of your script — see Guide to Replacements for those steps.
