Smart Suggestions generate a pronunciation for names, brand terms, and other unusual words, so you don't have to build a respelling from scratch. Preview each option and apply the one that sounds right.
Before you get started
- Smart Suggestions are available for English scripts only.
When to Use Smart Suggestions
Smart Suggestions work best for tricky, unusual, or uncommon words:
- Product and technical terms — tech, pharmaceutical, or medical terminology
- Acronyms — NGO, OSHA, SaaS, GDPR
- Loanwords — jalapeño, bruschetta, hors d'oeuvre
- Everyday but unusual words — slang, unique brand terminology, abbreviations
- Names — actors, leaders, athletes, business owners, writers
- Fictional words and names — invented characters, places, or worlds
If you're not sure whether the dictionary already covers a word, check for an Oxford Suggestion first — see Applying Respelling Suggestions. Smart Suggestions pick up where the dictionary leaves off.
Applying a Smart Suggestion
For a single use (not saved to your library):
- Highlight the word you want to adjust.
- Click the dropdown in the Smart Toolbar to view your options.
- If no options appear, click on Generate Suggestions to see Smart Suggestions.
- Click the play icon to preview each option.
- Select the one that sounds right.
To reuse the suggestion across your script or other projects, save it to your Pronunciation Library:
- Open the Replacements panel in the right sidebar.
- Add your word to the Original Text field, under New Replacement.
- Click on See Suggestions to open the suggested replacements panel.
- Click on the Smart Suggestions tab to generate alternatives.
- Preview the suggestions.
- Select the one that fits best.
- Click on Save to Library.
Once saved, the suggestion applies wherever that word appears in your script and other projects going forward.

Q: Can I use Smart Suggestions for scripts using non-English Voices?
A: No, Smart Suggestions are available for English scripts only.
Q: Can I opt out of Smart Suggestions for my team?
A: Yes. An admin can turn off smart features for the entire team at any time in Team Settings.
Q: None of the Smart Suggestions sound right. What now?
A: Build a custom respelling using the Respellings Reference Charts, or reach out to Support.
