Article overview
Shape exactly how your audio sounds with Voice Cues — adjust loudness, pace, pitch, and pauses without rewriting a word. Learn to apply, combine, and fine-tune cues across your script.
Getting your script to sound just right isn't always about the words — it's about the delivery. Voice Cues give you hands-on control over how a voice performs your script, phrase by phrase.
Before you start
You will need:
- A Studio project. Voice Cues are applied inside an existing project.
- A Caruso voice. Voice Cues are only available on Caruso voices.
- Your script. Have your text ready to enter or import.
What are Voice Cues?
Voice Cues let you adjust how specific words, phrases, or sentences are delivered. Use them to control:
- Loudness — how loud or quiet a word, sentence, or phrase is spoken
- Pace — how fast or slow a word, sentence, or phrase is spoken
- Pitch — the tone of the voice, raised or lowered
- Pause — a shorter or longer pause at a comma or period
Visual indicators
When a cue is applied, the selected text is underlined in a color that matches the cue type:
- Loudness: Green
- Pace: Yellow
- Pitch: Purple
- Pause: Red
- Multiple cues: White underline with a tooltip showing applied values
Underlines stay visible until the cue is removed.

Tips and tricks
- Cues sound different across voices. Each voice has a unique vocal range, so the same cue may produce different results on different voices.
- Apply cues to full sentences for best results. A cue on a single word is often less impactful than one applied to a full phrase. If it's not working, try selecting more text.
- Combine cues for more dramatic effect. A few combinations to try:
- Loud + slow on a call-to-action to grab attention.
- Quiet + fast to shift emphasis.
- When in doubt, tinker. Preview, adjust, and test different combinations. The more you experiment, the better your results.
Now that you know how to apply and adjust Voice Cues, you have full control over how your voiceover sounds — word by word, phrase by phrase.
FAQs
Q: Why did my cues disappear when I switched the voice?
A: Voice Cues are only available on voices that support them. Switching to a voice that doesn't support cues will remove any cues you've applied.
Q: I applied Bulk Cues — where did my previous cues go?
A: Bulk Cues replace any existing cues on the selected sections. Fine-tune individual sections afterward if needed.
Q: I added a new section — why didn't my Bulk Cues apply to it?
A: Bulk Cues don't apply automatically to new sections.
Q: Can I add a pause cue at the very end of a section?
A: No. Pause cues cannot be added to the final period of a section.
Q: Can I save my own Emotional Preset?
A: Not at this time. Presets are fixed and can't be created or customized. You can adjust the sliders after applying a preset to get closer to your desired delivery.
